The Member for Sandringham Murray Thompson today called upon Bayside residents to be particularly vigilant in water based activities and consider improving their water safety skills in preparation for next swimming season.

Based on the 2016/17 Life Saving Victoria statistics, 45 people lost their lives to drowning. This is a 20% increase in the 10 year average.

32% of fatal drownings occurred in bay/ beach/ ocean areas.

There were 519 rescues and 1655 first aid incidents in 2016/17.

Life Saving Victoria works with more than 1870 program partners across Victoria to deliver lifesaving services, water safety education and drowning prevention programs.

There are a range of learn to swim options, including Play it Safe by the Water, a public education and awareness program aimed at increasing water safety awareness for Victorians at risk of drowning. Information on these programs can be found at www.watersafety.vic.gov.au.

Mr Thompson encourages all Bayside families to stay safe by the water and take advantage of local learn to swim programs and local lifesaving activities.
